Prof. DSc Dimitar Grekov 31.10.2025

Prof. DSc Dimitar Ferdinandov Grekov is a Bulgarian scientist in the fields of crop production and animal husbandry, as well as a public figure.

He was born in 1958 in the town of Lyubimets, Haskovo Province.

He graduated from the Faculty of Viticulture and Horticulture at the Agricultural University – Plovdiv, where he successively held the academic positions of assistant, senior assistant, chief assistant, associate professor, and professor.

He obtained the scientific degrees of “Doctor” and “Doctor of Agricultural Sciences.”

He served as Dean of the Faculty of Agronomy (1999–2007).

He was Rector of the Agricultural University – Plovdiv (2007–2016).

He served as Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Bulgaria (2013–2014).

From 2016 to 2023, he headed the Center for Continuing Education at the Agricultural University.

He is a member of the Accreditation Council of the National Evaluation and Accreditation Agency, an international expert in university accreditation in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, and currently serves as Chair of the Standing Committee on Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine at the NEAA.

He has led four infrastructure and educational projects with a total value exceeding BGN 6 million, including a project for energy efficiency and the construction of a Training Center for Practical Education in Crop Production and Plant Protection.

Proof of his overall work as rector is the highest rating received in 2019 from the NEAA—9.61—which placed the Agricultural University among the top three universities in Bulgaria. Prof. Grekov has 42 years of academic experience, entirely connected with the Agricultural University – Plovdiv.

His scientific interests are in the fields of selection, genetics, breeding, and nutrition of the silkworm. He is the author of more than 140 scientific publications, textbooks, teaching aids, and books. He has donated his personal library to the Agricultural University.

Prof. Grekov has numerous specializations and has participated in international projects for the development of sericulture in South Korea, China, India, Hungary, Egypt, and Greece, where he is a co-author of new breeds and hybrids of the silkworm moth. He is an honorary professor of the Ukrainian Sericulture Research Institute.

He has supervised five successfully defended PhD students and more than 90 graduates. He has mentored dozens of agri-business professionals who have gone on to successful careers in practice.

The entire academic path of Prof. Dimitar Grekov is marked by active, consistent, and purposeful work to enhance the prestige of the Agricultural University – Plovdiv, to promote integration between education, science, and business, to strengthen cooperation between higher and secondary vocational agricultural education in Bulgaria, and to build sustainable partnerships with business organizations and multinational companies in the agricultural sector.
