Learning outcomes of the course unit:

I. Target group: Incoming Erasmus+ students who are offered to be included in a specially designed Bulgarian language course. It is a project activity organized as a collaboration between the Departments of Languages and Tourism at AU Plovdiv.

II. Course aim:  On the one hand, the language teaching team provides an introductory course of Bulgarian language, training the four basic language skills via modern technology and teaching methods – internet, video, on-line practising. On the other hand, lecturers from the Tourism Department acquaint the students with some historical facts and geographical features related to Bulgaria, followed by cultural traditions and customs, national cuisine, etc., in conformity with the language level of the taget group. Other activities include short walks and trips to famous cultural sites in and around Plovdiv. Thus, for a short time, students could immerse in the authentic atmosphere and faster adapt to the new cultural environment.

Course contents:

1. Bulgarian alphabet and pronunciation – 1 lecture + 1 seminar

2. The verb “to be“/“съм“/; the verb “have got” /”имам”/; some common verbs – 1 lecture + 1 seminar

3. Introduce yourself; making a dialogue of introduction – 1 lecture + 1 seminar

4. Some common nouns and adjectives /colours/ - 1 lecture

5. Greetings and common phrases – 1 seminar

6. Family and relatives; Present Tense of verbs – 1 lecture

7. Numbers from 1 to 100; Plural form of nouns and adjectives – 1 lecture

8. Gender and person agreement of nouns and adjectives – 1 lecture

9. Word order and composition of small texts – 2 lectures

10. Review and feedback - 1 seminar

11. Some features of Bulgarian geography and history – 2 lectures

12. Bulgarian culture and traditions – 2 lectures

13. Bulgarian national cuisine – 1 lecture

13. Walks in Plovdiv – 4 seminars

14. Trips around Plovdiv – 6 seminars

Planned learning activities and teaching methods:

• in-classroom activities: narration, discussion, work in pairs, multimedia presentations, audio-visual exercises, on-line testing;

• out-of-classroom activities: short walks and visits to places of interest  in Plovdiv, longer trips around the city to acquaint the students with the Bulgarian culture and lifestyle.
