Job Opening: Mathematician, Engineer, or Data Scientist for Advancing a Predictive Model in Green Waste Collection and Developing Microplastic Detection Methods in Soil Using Hyperspectral Imaging

The Centre for Cleantech and Biomass Resource Efficiency (CCBRE) at Plovdiv Agricultural University is seeking a Mathematician, Engineer, or Data Scientist to advance predictive modeling in green waste collection and develop innovative methods for microplastic detection in soil using hyperspectral imaging.
Key Responsibilities:
• Optimize predictive models to improve the accuracy of contamination level forecasts in municipal green waste.
• Analyze socio-economic and infrastructural factors impacting contamination to enhance model performance.
• Design algorithms to optimize waste collection routes, improving recycling efficiency and reducing costs.
• Expand and refine AI-based models for identifying microplastics in soil and compost using hyperspectral and RGB imaging.
• Generate and manage large, diverse datasets to train and validate advanced machine learning models.
• Close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams of environmental scientists, data analysts and engineers.
• Publication of research results in scientific journals and presentations at international conferences.
• Co-supervision of PhD students.
• Ensuring the effective operation and maintenance of the Institute's infrastructure.
• Providing technical advice to companies on site, providing specialist information and supporting the organisation of scientific events.
Requirements:
• Degree in engineering sciences, mathematics, physics, environmental sciences, computer science, image processing, or a related field
• Experience in the development and application of algorithms for data processing and pattern recognition.
• Knowledge of hyperspectral imaging and machine learning.
• Programming skills in Python, MATLAB or a comparable language.
• Knowledge in the field of environmental sciences is an advantage.
• Independent working style, ability to work in a team and strong communication skills.
Position Start Date:
Available from April 2025 onwards or earlier by arrangement. The position is limited to 5 years and can be extended thereafter.

Terms and conditions of salary
€3,100 gross per month, totaling €37,200 annually.
