Agricultural University – Plovdiv Celebrated "UNIgreen Day" by Planting a Kanzan Japanese Cherry Tree 06.03.2025

In honour of UNIgreen Day, students from the "Plant Protection" program planted a Kanzan Japanese cherry tree on the university campus. The event is part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development and raise environmental awareness among students and civil society.

The initiative was made possible thanks to a donation from the team of Mrs. Anastasia Damyanova from the "Nanovski" nursery in Bratanitsa, Pazardzhik region, who provided the Kanzan Japanese cherry trees. This donation highlights the commitment of the university and the business sector to jointly support the creation of a green and sustainable learning environment that inspires future generations and fosters environmental responsibility.

The Kanzan Japanese cherry tree is a true natural wonder, impressing with its magnificent pink blossoms. When in bloom, Kanzan trees create a sense of lightness and harmony with their soft pale pink tones, radiating elegance and joy. Kanzan is not only a symbol of spring but also of renewal, reminding us of the power of new beginnings and the opportunities nature provides. In Japan, the blooming of cherry trees is a time for celebration, and the "sakura" ritual is a true expression of joy and gratitude for the fleeting yet immensely precious beauty of life. Kanzan cherry blossoms attract admirers from all over the world who come together to experience this enchanting moment, fostering inspiration and a deep connection with nature.

Students from Agricultural University – Plovdiv actively participated in the planting process, learning more about the unique characteristics of the Kanzan Japanese cherry tree, known for its pink blossoms and rapid blooming. This tree symbolizes renewal and natural beauty, offering opportunities for education in sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture. The tree planting initiative is part of the activities within Work Package 6 (WP6) of the UNIgreen project. As part of this work package, students and researchers in the field will examine the ecological footprint of emissions generated by staff and student mobility within UNIgreen.

The planting event was led by Chief Assistant Professor Rumyana Georgieva from the Department of Crop Science at Agricultural University – Plovdiv, who provided participants with knowledge, skills, and guidance on the importance of the initiative in the context of environmental conservation. UNIgreen Day remains a key part of the university's sustainable development strategy, encouraging students' active engagement in environmental activities.

We extend our gratitude to all participants and to the team of "Nanovski" nursery for their support and contribution to the success of the event.
