Department of Horticulture
In the Department of Horticulture, the following disciplines are studied in the bachelor's course: Field vegetable production, Greenhouse vegetable production, Selection and seed production of vegetable crops, Floriculture and Ornamental dendrology. Lecturers from the department also teach classes in a number of master's courses. The teaching staff of the department consists of two professors, four associate professors, two chief assistants, one assistant, who bring the classes to a high professional level, introducing students to the latest achievements of world and native vegetable production, floriculture and ornamental gardening. In order to illustrate the taught material and improve the practical training of the students, educational assortments of the main types and varieties of vegetable and flower crops are created, which are updated annually. Under the guidance of professors from the department, scientific-experimental developments on bachelor's, master's and doctoral topics are brought out and successfully defended. Multimedia equipment, a computer network and the Internet, as well as live plants grown in the experimental field, are used in the presentation of the lessons. The department has developed two master's courses in "Production of seed and planting material" and "Ornamental plants and landscape design".
The experimental field of the Department of Horticulture is based on an area of 25 da. There is a 1.6 da steel-glass greenhouse for the hydroponic cultivation of vegetable and flower crops. Two plastic greenhouses with a total area of 1 da are in operation, which are used for experiments, carrying out practical exercises and teaching-production practices in the disciplines of Field vegetable production, Greenhouse vegetable production and Floriculture. To carry out the educational process, the department is provided with three educational laboratories in the building of the Faculty of Viticulture and Horticulture and one in the New Academic Building. The main scientific activity is related to research in the field of selection and technology of vegetable and flower crops, variety testing and application of foliar fertilizers and stimulants. In recent years, two varieties of cabbage, six varieties of pepper and one variety of physalis have been selected. There are significant scientific developments in the field of seed production and seed science in vegetable crops. The staff of the department regularly participates in national and international scientific conferences. The department has developed methods for determining the leaf area of physalis and the growth strength of seeds, for which there is a certificate of author's product. Lecturers from the department are actively involved in the ERASMUS+ program, they give lectures to foreign students, in fulfillment of several contracts concluded with universities from different countries of Europe. It has a scientific laboratory, equipped with the necessary equipment for performing some biometric, physiological and agrochemical analyzes and for the quality of vegetable production and flower crops and seeds. A number of scientific projects led by the department have purchased modern apparatus and equipment for scientific research and for the Experimental field. The educational base is in good condition and fully responsible for carrying out the practical exercises with the students and for the scientific research work of the teachers.
