Department of Viticulture
The Department of Viticulture and Fruit Growing has a long history in agricultural education in Bulgaria. Over the years, prominent and well-known professors such as Corresponding Member Prof. Dr. Mincho Kondarev and Prof. Velko Velkov, contributed a lot to the modern development of viticulture and fruit growing in Bulgaria.
At the moment, the teaching staff of the department consists of one professor, six associate professors and three main assistants, who teach classes for students of the various qualification degrees (bachelor, master and doctor).
To ensure the educational process in the university building, the department has two classrooms in Viticulture and Ampelography, two classrooms in Fruit and Pomology, one chemical laboratory in Winemaking and a modern laboratory in Biotechnology.
The department has a modern educational and experimental base, located in the land of the village of Brestnik, near the city of Plovdiv, where practical classes in Viticulture, Horticulture, Ampelography and Pomology are held with students from all faculties of the university.
Over 400 wine and dessert (seeded and seedless) varieties of vines are grown and stored in the vineyards on an area of 30 hectares. With this large gene pool, Bulgaria is one of the leading places in Europe for a diverse varietal collection in one place, where you can see all the vine training systems and rootstocks used in viticulture.
Among the vineyards of the Agricultural University - Plovdiv is located the only wine cellar for microvinification of an experimental nature in Bulgaria, where the practical exercises in Winemaking are held.
On an area of 20 hectares of fruit plantations, more than 200 varieties of different fruit species and experimental plantations with different cultivar rootstock combinations are maintained. The base has an assortment of deciduous and non-deciduous tropical and subtropical species.
In the experimental base of the Department of Viticulture and Horticulture, there are modern classrooms equipped with the necessary equipment and technology for the normal course of the educational process.
The department leads the master's courses:
- "Viticulture with the Fundamentals of Winemaking";
- "Fruit growing - production and production management";
- "Fruit production and post-harvest technologies" - Joint master's degree with UHT - Plovdiv.
